This is what the not-there man had been: he had been the airy space on either side of a translucent veil which had separated two halves of a large and empty room. He had been a too-often though-of thought which had repeatedly changed its mind. The not-there man’s voice had been a not-sound, his face had been a not-picture and his life had been a not-story.

But other people had known him like a…
